Our Founders

Susan and Don Cox at the Groundbreaking party

Our founders at the groundbreaking party

Through the years thousands have experienced first hand the warm and caring compassion that defines For the Love of Christi’s Founders, Susan and Don Cox.Their selfless commitment to help others grieve–born from their own tragic loss of their beautiful 20 year old daughter Christi–continues to touch all of us deeply. Many of us who are (or were) in a support group will never forget the depth of understanding that comes from the hearts of these two generous souls.

Since founding For the Love of Christi more than 20 years ago (on the 2nd anniversary of Christi’s death), Susan and Don have guided and given form to a one-of-a-kind grief center where love is the centerpiece and unconditional acceptance of all who ask for help is paramount.

Over the years, they—and their staff—served more than 70,000 people (directly and indirectly) who came seeking help in a time of loss. Susan served as an unpaid Executive Director for 18 1/2 years and remains active today in all facets of the organization’s grief support mission. Both serve on the Board and give of their time and resources.

Don and Susan jointly acquired the land on which the Christi Center was built. Then, with the help of friends and supporters, they added an annex (The Christi Center) designed to accommodate larger support group sessions and more people. They created not only adult group sessions (based on type of loss), but eventually added sessions for teens struggling with loss as well as for children (our Kids Who Care Program).

In recent years, For the Love of Christi, has continued to work with local public schools (through their counseling services) to meet special grief support needs in the wake of campus tragedies. The organization also receives major grants from both the State Attorney General’s Office and Travis County to provide grief support (including court accompaniment) to crime victims.

In looking back at Don and Susan’s 20 year journey of compassion and accomplishment many of us believe it is past time to give something back for all they have done. Our hope is that you will join us in this in this deserving mission.
